What is Creatinine - Body Fluid?

Creatinine is a type of blood test that measures the level of creatinine in the blood. It is a waste product forms when creatinine breaks down. It’s found in muscle it provides information on kidneys of how well they are working. The kidneys have millions of small blood filters called nephrons and they constantly filter through very small blood clusters known as glomeruli. These filter waste products like excess water, other impurities out of the blood. The waste products are stored in the bladder then removed during urination. Creatinine is the substance that kidneys normally eliminate from the body. Doctors measure the level of creatinine in blood to see how well the kidneys are functioning. A high level may indicate that your kidneys are damaged and not working properly.

Preparation

Uses

Some diseases can be found by testing blood these include: Glomerulonephritis, Pyelonephritis, prostate disease, blockage of the urinary tract, which may be due to kidney stones decreased blood flow to the kidneys, which may be caused by congestive heart failure, diabetes, or dehydration the death of kidney cells as a result of drug abuse

Procedure

Process of obtaining a blood sample in adults:

• A band is wrapped around the arm, 3-4 inches above the collection site (the superficial vein that lies within the elbow pit)
• The needle cap is removed and is held in line with the vein, pulling the skin-tight
• The required amount of blood sample is collected by pulling the plunger of the syringe out slowly
• The wrap band is removed, gauze is placed on the collection site, and the needle is removed
• The blood is immediately transferred into the blood container, which has the appropriate preservative/clot activator/anti-coagulant
• The syringe and the needle are disposed into the appropriate “sharps container” for safe and hygienic disposal
